Violence erupted today at Ilesha, Osun State as armed thugs identified to be working with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) raided two voters cards collection centres to attack people waiting to collect their cards.

A statement issued by the rival political party, All Progressives Congress campaign council has however warned that resorting to violence would not stop the collapse of the Peoples Democratic Party and its failure at the next election.

Gov Gboyega Oyetola

The statement read ”The Adegboyega Oyetola Campaign Council has condemned in strong terms the unprovoked attack by PDP thugs on members of our party APC and innocent bystander in Ilesa West Local Government this morning.

“The attack on innocent party members, school children and teachers occurred in the early hours of the day when people filed up on the instruction of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) at the designated ward collation centres.

“This morning, there was pandemonium across all the political wards collation centres in Ilesa West local government areas as thugs and hoodlums suspected to be working for the leading opposition party, PDP destabilized and disrupted the ongoing collection of Permanent Voters Card PVC in the city of Ilesa.

“Members of the public were at their different collation centres in Ilesa West LG and the exercise was going on peacefully and smoothly, until when one notorious thug by name, ‘Dada Ojo’ joined by the PDP candidate for the Osun State of House of Assembly in the 2023 general election in Ilesa West Wale Akerele (Water), Elewedu Lekan, Lima Abiola, Rotimi Abu, Denjuwòn among others led eight PDP branded vehicles conveying hoodlums, miscreants carrying guns, machete, UTC axe etc invaded Isalè Gbogi (Ward 3 Collation Centre) and started harassing INEC officials, in a bid to breach the peace and disrupt the process. The PDP thugs axed Opeyemi Oke (APC Ward 3 Youth Leader), Wale Adeoye, Seyi Anjorin and many others who were rushed to nearby PHC for quick medical attention.

“The rampaging PDP thugs did not stop at this, they also wreck havoc at Ward 5 collation centre at LA Primary School, Isokun area where the Ward Chairman of APC, Mr. Olalekan Abiodun was injured with severe cuts on his head and hand while an innocent teacher in the school also got his wrist broken when the PDP thugs forcefully broke into a classroom.

“The PDP members and thugs moved into the streets and started shooting sporadically and uncontrollably into the air forcing many traders to close their shops for fear of being hit by stray bullet, while many innocent citizens were injured while scampering for safety.

“It will be recalled that on Tuesday, the 21st day of June 2022, while the convoy of the Governor was returning from campaign at Osu, headquarters of Atakumosa West LG around Ikoyi junction in Ilesa, one Seyi Ajakaiye in the company of other notorious PDP thugs numbering about fifteen (15) attacked the Governor’s convoy with life bullets fired at the vehicles before they were warded off by security operatives in the convoy of the Governor.

“On the evening of the same day, at about 9p.m, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Leader in Ilesa West, Hon. Abiola Olagunju was attacked and seriously injured in front of his father’s house around General Hospital Area of Ilesa by the same Seyi Ajakaiye and his accomplices.

“While official report was lodged with the security operatives, it is disheartening that no arrest has been made by the law enforcement agencies till now.
In the meantime, we want to appeal to all our members and supporters to remain law abiding as the Governor who is the Chief Security Officer of the state will do all that is possible to maintain peace and tranquility in the state. We will not allow anybody to cow you or create a sense of fear that will not allow people to come out and exercise their civic responsibility on 16th of July, 2022 as this is the game plan of the opposition party.”
